Where did my feet go?

Gaining weight most certainly doesn't happen over night, but sometimes the realization of just how bad the wheels have fallen off hits you like a ton of bricks. It's a sad and lonely moment when you're standing in front of the mirror and you can admit to yourself that you look like a hundred pounds of pure potbellied stallion in a fifty pound bag! For the past week I've been trying to diagnose the cause of my current "fluffy" situation (thank you Gabriel Iglesias). So I came up with a list of my ten bad habits:
  1. Never eat breakfast (like ever!)
  2. Drink too much coke (cause it's amazing!)
  3. Don't drink enough water (it's not coke!)
  4. Too much French fries (they go great with coke!)
  5. Too much drive thru (I don't have to leave my car to get coke and french fries!)
  6. Don't eat until starving (bloated from all the coke!)
  7. Bored eater/ tv eater (that coke commercial looked refreshing!)
  8. Don't get enough fruits and vegetables (there's no fruit in coke?)
  9. Always go for seconds (I still have coke left, I should get more food to go with it!)
  10. Not enough sleep (this one is unrelated to the coke consumption, I'm sure.)
So while I'm going to improve in all of these areas, if I try to tackle them all at once, I know I'll give up. So for the next ten weeks, I will focus on one each week. This week will be breakfast week! I will  take extra effort to make sure I jump start my metabolism ( if I have any left) by eating a good breakfast. I'll keep you posted on what a difference it makes.

If anyone has quick healthy breakfast suggestions, let me know. I'd also love to hear about your bad habits and what you can do to break them. Be specific. It's easier to stick to your guns when you know exactly what you need to do! Good luck!

  1. Those are some good reasons Craig. After bring totally off coke at the first of last year after my surgery, I too have fallen victim to the wonderful nectar. I don't like the left over headaches. So good luck with the soda part. I'm there behind you!!!

  2. The mind is VERY powerful. I know that's a "duh" statement but I had no idea just how powerful it is. Several years ago after I graduated from high school and started into this "real world" I found out that soda is terrible for you (ok so I always knew but I didn't know to what extent). So I decided to give it up. And being the stubborn individual that I am it was actually quite easy. I began telling myself I didn't like soda. I got to the point that when I actually did drink a soda it made me SICK! I seriously wanted it out of my stomach! I had no problem for several years. Then I went back to college. Caffeine started looking really good after working nearly full time and taking over full time college courses. Needless to say that is where my bad habit currently stands. But going back to the beginning, I was shocked at how powerful my mind was once I told myself we were down with soda. It really worked well.

  3. I think the key in an goal is to start small. I myself am trying to quit drinking caffenine, then eventually be okay with just having a sprite or root beer occasionally. I've been going for about 3 months. I started off with only allowing myself a caffenine soda for lunch and dinner(I use to have a coke or dr pepper for breakfast)and I did that for about a month. Then I only allowed myself a soda at dinner (that was rough giving up the lunch one). I did that for another month. Then I went to only having a soda when me and my husband went out or I when I went to lunch. That wasn't too hard cause it was kind of a reward and special(cut down on having soda in the house and grocery bill). Now I am working on no caffine at all...its rough but not too bad. I already feel better and suprisingly have more energy. I'm proud of you craig! Good Luck!

  4. Craig,
a few months ago a good friend of mine advised me to read a book that helped her. After she heard about my health issues of the past two years she was very concerned and told me that if I didn't buy the book, she would buy it and send it to me! The book, the Schwarzbein Principle, outlines a program created by an endocrinologist that addresses insulin resistance and the damage that is created by overconsumption of sugars and simple carbohydrates. It was hard to accept at first because it contradicted a lot of what I believed about nutrition, but the more I read, the more it made sense and I was intrigued. I discussed what I learned with my endocrinologist and she said this is the way I absolutely should be eating. She told me that my bloodwork shows that I am insulin resistant and pre-diabetic. One of the obvious signs of insulin resistance and pre-diabetes is excessive belly fat.
It is a book definitely worth reading... it explains how food works in the body and how the body reacts to what we eat and why we get fat. Since I finished the book, I have found other books based on the same research and wanted to pass this info on to you. Follow the links and read about the books to get a general idea of what they cover.
